The Legendary Indian Technocrat - Sir M Visvesvaraya

“Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.”

It was dark midnight. A train was pacing to its destination with a howl in the silence of the night. A man was sleeping with his head on the side window of the train. Suddenly he woke up from his sleep. He jumped from his seat and pulled the chain hanging just over his head. The chain was nothing but the danger chain. The train moved for some more distance and stopped suddenly. The train security personals, employees and other passengers in the train rushed to the compartment to know what had happened. Someone even suspected that the man did it in his sleeping mood. So they were angry towards this man. All surrounded the man and asked the reason behind chain pulling.

“There is a crack in the rail after some more meters from here!!! If train goes over it mishaps may occur.” The man said confidently & quietly.

“What nonsense you are saying. In this dark night how did you see the crack which is far in front ?” That was the response of the people.

“You just check it and then talk to me ” The calm and composed man replied very gently.

The railway persons got down to rail. With the help of a torch they checked the railway track. To their surprise they saw a big crack in the rail a few meters away from the stopped train! If train passed over the crack definitely some mishap was obvious in that dark village night.

All persons again gathered around the man who predicted it correctly. He told that he heard the sound from the track while sleeping and it changed at some place . The vibrating sound changed too heavily that the man recognized that it was due to the crack in the railway line. Do you know who was that man who saved many lives from death?

One such deserving son of the soil was this person who is non other then Bharath Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya or M.Visvesvaraya.

...Bharath Raatna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Today we will learn some more facts about Sir MV.  Below are some of the contribution from Sir MV.

1. Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, Mysore: Mysore/Mandya had historically been dry. Mass migration to adjoining areas in the hot summers. A severe drought in 1875–76 had wiped out one-fifth of the population of the Kingdom of Mysore. Crop failures were common due to lack of water for irrigation. The Kaveri river was seen as a potential source of irrigation water for the farmers in and around Mysore. Brindavan Gardens.....10,000 workers were employed.

Team leader
Once when he was on a study tour in America, Visvesvaraya’s host said the group had to climb a four-floor-high ladder to see how a particular machine worked. Everyone was scared. Not Sir MV! He climbed nimbly all the way to the top. He was 85 years old.

During the Mysuru Dasara celebrations, British officers sat on chairs while Indian officers had to sit on the floor or remain standing at the back. Visvesvaraya stopped going to these durbars because of the discrimination. The government noticed this and got chairs for the Indian officers too.

Big buildings and structures cannot be built by a single person. Dreamers, researchers, funders, masons, labourers and many others have to work together to build them. Sir MV worked hard and efficiently, inspiring everyone around him to give their best too.

In his 90s, he was called upon by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to examine several proposals for bridges to be built over the Ganga. He first did an aerial survey of the region. No one expected him to come to inspect the rocky and dangerous terrain. Since Sir MV never did anything without thorough study and preparation, of course he travelled to the region to make notes. Based on the location selected by him, a road-cum-railway bridge was built near Mokama, Bihar.

Why Sir MV deserve so much of Love and affection from society?

Work is just a part...many of the salaried employee also does the similar things. Why society gives importance only to certain perople, See APJ Abdul Kalam..... They did the work as a part of their job. But they did exibit some ordinary things which made them extra ordinary....

They did not limit their identity only to be Betanbhogi Sevaks but a great statesman. They have lifted them up from their selfish need ....expanded their family boundary...They have accepted the society as their family, social problems as their own.....country as their home. Today also many technocrats are there but many are imited to Betanbhogi sevak, salaraied service man. Take money for the work and live a luxuary life with mini family....But great person raise beyond family ...

Visvesvaraya was a very simple man. He focussed almost all his energy and thoughts on nation-building. He believed that all people should be respected for the work they did.. Sir MV always Armed with intellect to end problems, crowned with humanity to win hearts, lived an extended life till 101 years for the countryman. I bowdown to such a greate legendary person...
